GIB - Games in Business, is a term we at Right-X have coined. However, if you type "Games in Business" in a search engine, it will give you the spectrum of things that we consider as elements of GIB. We could list those as follows;
1. Serious Games
2. Game based learning
3. Gamestroning
4. Simulations
5. Gamification
We have ordered them in the descending order of the "Gameness" of these activities. Let us understand this in the descriptions of each label.
Serious Games
These are heavy games. These games will have the purpose of training. At the end of the game the players are expected to gain substantial set of skills. There is a considerable investment required for these games. It's a pure game.
Game based learning
In this segment, learners are given a game to play. But by playing the game players are given insights related to management. However, the game may not be related to the work of the learners.
Gamestroming
This is an approach that businesses that require greater creativity are practising. In the management process when they make decisions, do a discussion, collect ideas they will use a small game to facilitate the activity. So people will be active, they will enjoy, and they will think out of the box. All over the business there will be small small games present.
Simulations
Simulation is the real activity that learners are facing. However, not in the real world. Learners will do the same activity that they will carry out in the business, but in a computer generated environment. Some of the simulations can be very expensive. Mostly the management simulations will provide information step by step and managers will have to make decisions on appropriate actions they proposed to take.
Gamification
In Gamification, players do not play a game. They will work as usual. However, they will get the experinace of a game.
Gamification is taking game elements from the gaming world, and use them in the work life. It was identified that those who play games feel happy, addicted when they come across gaming elements like Points, badges and leader boards.
Gamification designers will design the player journey aiming at a behavioural change, and present the players with gaming elements.
This is an engagement strategy used in the contemporary business.
